                Chamomile
Chamomile is another versatile herb. Good for digestion (upset stomach) it is gentle enough for children. Remember  the childrens story "Peter Rabbit" ? He was given chamomile tea. It has a relaxing effect, but doesn't "drug you"  It is good externally for soothing sunburn & skin irritations.  It can also be used in hair rinses & cosmetics. This is one you'll want to have on hand.
                  How To Use
Internally chamomile can be used daily without ill effects. It even tastes good so you can use it in a tea.
If you prefer capsules, use 1 or 2 caps up to 3 times daily.
Extract ,use 10 to 20 drops in water up to 3 times daily

External Uses
        Hair rinse-see my fun pages
Skin- can be used in any of the salves, creams or washes.  For a wash just steep the flowers & apply to the affected area.
            How to Grow
Chamomile is available in both an annual & perennial form. Both are effective. I prefer the perennial form but only because you only have to plant it once. (guess I'm lazy) It is easy to grow. Seed in the spring in full sun, well drained soil. You can also buy the plants at most nurseries.  The flowers are what you use, harvest them just as they open. Extremely easy to dry & keep, you may want to keep some for potpourri as they smell great!
             St. John's Wort
St. John's wort contains hypericin, a compound that is being researched for a variety of ailments most notably anxiety & depression.  It seems to act like the prescription medicine Prozac without any of Prozacs side effects. It calms & soothes but doesn't make you feel "drugged".  St. John's wort is also used externally as it promotes the healing of wounds especially  infected ones.
               How To Use
St. John's wort is available in many combinations as well as by itself.
Orally  take 2 capsules up to 3 times daily.
In extract take 10 to 15 drops  mixed in water  2 times a day.

                   How to Grow
St. John's wort is very easy to grow & spreads rapidly. It is a perennial with a bushy growth habit. It flowers around the end of June & the flowers are where the hypericin is found. Harvest them as they open, dry & store, capsule or make extract or they also make a wonderful ingredient to add to your herbal salve.
