Pneumonia |
This is an illness that is much in the news today due to the mystery disease aka SARS, I don't have any "new" information on it but I thought I would deal with pneumonia as it seems to be attacking the respitory system, hence it's name. |
Anything that strengthens your immune system will help you to ward off illnesses, including pneumonia. Vitamins For: Vitamin A is very important to protect the lungs from damage. Vitamin C is also essential as it helps the immune system & also reduces inflammation. Zinc is needed for tissue repair. |
Herbs For: |
There is an excellent herbal product called Clear Lungs that is made by Natural Alternatives that helps provide relief from the shortness of breath & tightness in the chest. It comes in 2 formulas, one with ephedra & one without. I have personally used the one WITHOUT the ephedra as ephedra has the ability to speed up the heartrate, something I definately don't need. Check your local health food store for it. Echinacea is one of the most effective herbs for building immunity and/or shortening the severity & duration of illnesses. Goldenseal is a proven natural antibiotic. I will also add that this can be a helpful herb now as some diseases are now developing a resistance to synthetic antibiotics Ginger Root is an antimicrobial agent & is helpful in reducing fever. The mushrooms, shiitake, reisha, & maitake build immunity & fight infection. |
Dosages |
Prevention dosages are much smaller than those the body needs if it has already contracted an illness, especially one this serious. Vit. A- 25,000 IU per day. Usean emulsion form for easier assimilation & safety. Vit. C- 2,000 to 5,000 IU per day. Zinc lozenges are very effective. Use as dirested on bottle. For the herbs (which I believe are not as easy to overdose on) I would use 2 to 4 capsules daily for prevention & up to twice that many if you are already infected. See your doctor if your symptoms continue or worsen! |
Nutritional Support |
Drink PLENTY of fresh juices. Liquids help toclear out the lung secretions. Consider purchasing a juicer as you can then be sure of what you are drinking. Also lots of purified water. Include "green drinks" in your diet or take chlorophyll tablets. Try a diet of raw fruits & veggies for a week. |
