Why: Because many thought Sirius killed him, and to hide away from the Potters friends because of the shame he brought with him in his wizard form.

What: A stag
When: year's ago to keep Prof. Lupin company when he was just a boy at hogwarts.
Why: It was because Lupin was a werewolf, and each full-moon night he'd be in his encagement under the Whomping Willow alone, so James became an Animagus to keep him company.
Where: Under the Womping Willow
Who: Sirius Black (Padfoot)
What: a 'shaggy black dog'
When: The same time James Potter did
Why: He was going to help keep Lupin company
Where: Under the Womping Willow, in Azkaban, and in the streets near Privet Drive, around Hogwarts.
