Hogwarts was found over a thousand years ago, the exact date is uncertain, by the four greatest wizards of that time: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin, who the four houses were named after.
They all built the castle together, far from prying muggle eyes, for it was during the time when magic was feared by common people and witches and wizards suffered much persecution.
For a few years, the founders worked happily together, finding youngsters who showed signs of magic and bringing them to the castle to be educated. But after a while disagreements sprang up between them. Slytherin wished to be more selective about the students who came to Hogwarts. He believed that magical-learning should only be accessed by all-magic families. He disliked taking students of Muggle parentage, believing them to be untrustworthy. After a while, there was a serious argument on the subject between Slytherin and Gryffindor, and Slytherin left the school. Reliable historical sources tell us this much, but these honest facts have been obscured by the fanciful legend of the Chamber of Secrets. The story goes that Slytherin had built a hidden chamber, of which the others knew nothing about.
Slytherin, according to the legend, sealed the Chamber of Secrets so that none would be able to open it until his own true heir arrived at the school. The heir alone would be able to unleash the horror within and purge the school of all who were untrustworthy to study magic.

Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts, Teach us something please, Whether we be old and bald, Or young with scabby knees, Our heads could do with filling, With some interesting stuff, For now they're bare and full of air, Dead flies and bits of fluff, So teach us things worth knowing, Bring back what we've forgot, Just do your best, we'll do the rest, And learn until our brains all rot. |
