His wife Nell died in a car accident in the first season (episode#44 - Luck of the Draw) and he has 2 daughters called Susan and Anna. Anna has a son called Sam and Susan is a teacher - both live elsewhere. He began a relationship in 1998 with Sally Downie, a new lawyer in town, but they split in 1999. Sally was representing a mother who had been involved in an accident and was accused of drink driving - Tom didn't agree with her views, especially because one of his close friends had been the victim. The accident also brought back sad memories of his wife's death.
The arrival of Reverend Grace Curtis in season 8 puts Tom in a quandary and they get closer and closer until Grace kissed him in the season finale. Their relationship progresses slowly in Season 9 with the usual Blue Heeler's hiccups, culminating in a marriage proposal mid-season. As is always the case in TV-land, true love never runs smoothly, but Tom and Grace finally make it official in the ep Salvation in Season 9.
