"You must do the thing you think you cannot do."
-Eleanor Roosevelt, 1884-1962.
He had just missed the Bulls game... again. The cop sighed and turned off his radio.
He had waited nearly an hour before the Mountie stepped out of the Consulate and into the bright sunshine, and Ray turned his key in the ignition, starting the engine.
He could have slept in late in his large bed. He could have whacked some weeds in Maria’s garden. He could have washed his classic car, too.
A man can do a million things on a Saturday afternoon in Chicago.
Ray, however, had chosen to wait for Benton Fraser, RCMP.
*What the hell for?*
He knew the answer and it scared the hell out of him.
The Canadian climbed into the passenger seat with a look of remorse. "I am so terribly sorry, Ray. I did not realize my meeting with the Inspector would require so much time."
"Come on, Benny. It’s really no big deal."
Ray pulled out into the quiet street. It was the weekend and nobody was out to create a traffic jam for him. There was no reason for Ray to flip the bird.
There was no one to hinder him now.
It was unnatural.
"No, Ray. I had promised you I would only require only a few minutes to…"
"Fraser! Didn’t you hear me the first time? I said it was no big deal! If I wanted to leave, I promise you I would have left long ago, but I didn’t! I stayed because I promised you a ride and I lo…"
That was when Ray clamped his mouth shut.
*Stupid! How could you be so stupid?*
"Ray? What were you going to say?"
"It was nothing, Benny. Okay?"
"Ray, it didn’t sound like nothing. Please tell me."
Ray stared at the distressed look on his partner’s face. He was no longer safe in his own skin.
Should he say the four-letter ‘L’ word to his best friend? How would Benny react? Would he run? Would he stay?
Two men can do a million things on a Saturday afternoon in Chicago.
"Oh, Benny," Ray groaned, "I stayed because I love you."
The Riv then stopped at a red light on a deserted street corner and the classic car had remained there for a very long time.
-The End-
