Located near Apache Junction, Arizona, at the foot of Superstion Mountain, Apacheland was the set for several Western television series, such as Have Gun, Will Travel and Death Valley Days. Scenes for Elvis Presley's dreadful movie, Charro! were done there. Because I had a friend who was an Apacheland employee, I saw one scene being filmed. If you remember the scene where the church was blown up -- that was at the east end of the Apacheland street. Many other films were set there, as well. Apacheland was a rather important part of my life, for a couple of years in the late 1960s. I encountered interesting characters, there. At the time, I thought they were quite heroic. Looking back, I know they were just... people making a business out of displaying and selling a kind of fantasy. It wasn't a bad thing, it just wasn't really what I thought it was, at the time. In 1969, after these photos were taken, a fire swept through the town, devastating it. It was rebuilt, and some say it's better now than it was then, but I think you just can't go back.... |
