My mother, who was and is the very soul of honesty, actually wrote a note to my school so that I could get out of classes and go to this Dodgers-Giants game at the old Rendezvous Park in Mesa, Arizona. (She must have had a moment of insanity.) The year was 1966. The Dodgers were hot. That's Sandy Koufax, one of my heroes, on the mound. Both he and Don Drysdale pitched, that day. Either of them could pitch a whole game, and win, without relief. There aren't many you can say that about these days. Did I mention that, while using my friend's binnoculars to explore during a lull in the game, we found our assistant principal in the crowd? If he spotted us, he never said a word and, of course, we could never rat on him without ratting on ourselves.... |

These tickets were from other spring training games. They were interesting games -- I got to see The Penguin play -- but they were nothing like that 1966 game. |
