Back to Recipes index SYRUP

2 heaping quarts sugar
1 qt. water
½ tsp. powdered alum
½ tsp. sodium benzoate
food coloring (optional)
½ tsp. vanilla
25¢ bottle of maple flavoring

Bring to medium boil and let boil good for 10 minutes.  Just before taking off, add alum and sodium benzoate.  Then add coloring, not too much, just enough to color the mixture.  About 2 minutes before removing from heat, add vanilla and maple flavoring.

Note: I have no idea what a "25 cent bottle of maple flavoring" would be, today.  This recipe goes back to the 1940s, when Watkins (I think) men sold flavorings and spices door to door.  (I still have a few old Watkins boxes of spices that were my mother's.)  My folks have often mentioned making this syrup to use on pancakes.
