Wagon Train ("Wagons Ho!)  (1957 to 1965)
[Ward Bond, Robert Horton, Frank O'Rourke, Terry Wilson,
John McIntire,
Robert Fuller, Denny Miller, Michael Burns]

Wagons Ho! Roll the train
Over hill and over plain.
Wagons Ho! Wagon train
Through the dust or drivin' rain.
Many trials, many fears
Many hopes for future years
In the hearts of pioneers,
Wagons Ho!

They will face bitter cold,
They will face burnin' heat.
They'll go twenty miles to sundown
And be too tired to eat.
Then when night shadows fall
Someone watches over all
Till at dawn they hear the call,
Wagons Ho!

Wagons Ho!

Wagons Ho!...

(Words:  Frederick Herbert; Music:  Jerome Moross)
The history of this program and its themes is tricky.  Ward Bond was the wagonmaster (Seth Adams) until his death in 1961.  (I loved him -- he always made my think of my grandfather.)  John MacIntire took his place, as a new character.  Robert Horton, who portrayed the scout, left the series and was replaced by two scouts:  Robert Fuller and Denny (Scott) Miller.

At about the same time, color TV was becoming common enough in the home that most programs were, or were about to be, shot in color.  There was also a move away from half-hour- and hour-long series toward 90-minute dramatic productions.
Wagon Train underwent all those changes.  It wasn't long before the Ward Bond episodes began to be rerun in syndication, sometimes called, Major Adams, Trailmaster.  Later, the color episodes were shown in syndication on cable television.  Sometimes, the closing theme was different from the opening theme and the 2 were switched.  SO... there seem to have been at least 4 different Wagon Train theme songs (and/or closing themes) along the way, to go with all the various versions of the program.  I'm giving the lyrics to 2 themes here -- the one above is the one I remember best.
Alternate Wagon Train theme:

Roll along, Wagon Train.
Rollin' over prairie where there ain't no grass,
Rollin' over mountains where there ain't no pass.

Sittin' on a board eyin' the weather,
Prayin' to the Lord we stay together,
Side by side on the Wagon Train.

Wagon Train, roll along.
Pickin' up a passenger in every town,
Wonderin' if he's ever gonna shoot you down.

Lookin' for a town, ain't it a pity.
Lookin' for a gal, needn't be pretty,
If she'll ride on the Wagon Train.

Wagon ho!  Gotta keep them on the run.
Wagon ho!  Gotta follow the sun.
