As much as I hate to admit to it, I am relying more and more on technology to solve my everyday needs. When new electronic gadgets such as handphones, pagers, even palm pilots came on the market, I promised myself that I would never be one of those technie addicts. In fact, I was one of those who stood aside and laughed at those people who were clamouring for these new-age stuff as though they couldn't live a decent life without them. Well, the joke's on me now.

I lost my beloved Nokia 6110 a couple of months ago. Not only was it a gift from my dad on the account of my examination results, it also revoked much sentimental emotions since I bought it with a special friend. I misplaced it this mega bookstore in Singapore without even realising that I lost it, till I needed to make a call. I combed every inch of the place until I finally admitted that someone dishonest had taken it. Worse of all, I couldn't contact the person since he/she switched off the phone once they grabbed it. Being the proud owner of a Nokia phone, I had put the phone to good use, ensuring that it had every form of security possible, from the PIN code to the security code.

The moment I convinced myself that my phone was gone for good, I felt so vulnerable and lost. As though a part of me was lost forever. All my contact numbers were in there since I gathered that a phone unlike a computer would never be struck by a virus with all the data wiped out. I spent weeks trying to get every single number back. Of course, I never thought that my life would turn out so dependent on portable technology.

But I guess, after the incident, I have succumbed to the game. The feeling of losing touch with the people around you really wasn't inviting. The thought of having to look high and low for a pay phone, which was never around during crucial hours was enough to propel me to get a newer phone, the newer generation of my phone. I am now a self professed techie-addict. No, like many of my friends I really can't imagine the day when there is no more technology and no more computer geniuses to invent such gadgets.

Like what they say, "If you can't beat them, join them!"
