If you have even looked at my site to any degree, you have probably noted that Kuririn is my favorite Dragonball character. I love him bacause he's adorable. He's sweet. What's not to like, right?
If you are a vetern in Japanese and in Dragonball, you've probably seen the parralls in the names of the charcters and diffrent types of food, generally. Here are some prime examples:
Puar: chinese tea
Oolong: Japanese tea
Vejita: Vegetable
Kakkarotto: Carrot
Nappa: Cabbage
Gohon: Rice
There are more - indeed one for each of the characters with the exception of the Sons and the Briefs family, who are names after either the sky or underware. Kuririn is also named after a type of food. (I know what you are thinking, you exclusivelly english viewers, and he's not named after "krill")
In Japanese: Kuri = chestnut
And so, at least in Japan (glares at the confused english views), Kuririrn's name is an extended version of the word "Kuri" meaning chestnut.
Now that you understand you are probably going "what, he's named after a nut? His name is chestnut?"
Exactly right. If translated technnically, you might have heard Gokuu or Gohon (or perhaps "Sky" and "Rice") yelling to our favorite bald warrior by crying out "Chestnut!"
The meaning of his name to those people who know it places special significance of chestnuts. And so it was with great delight that my younger brother discovered this one Christmas morning and he began to sing the bane of all Christmas songs - the song I will never hear again without cringing.
"Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..."
