Helena Campsite

May, 2000

I accessed the Helena Campsite from where the Bibbukmun track crossed Allen Road near Driver Road. Allen Road runs by the Hills Forest Activity Centre in Mundaring. However, since I passed through, a sign has been put on the side of the gate barring access to the road except for those with permission from CALM and the gate has been locked. The reason for barring access is to prevent the spread of forest dieback disease. It looks as though Helena Campsite may not be available to day-trippers as other access roads, whilst not closed, have signs barring access.

Above left: The Bibbulmun Track crosses Allen Road between the two signs, but alas the road may now be closed to general traffic. Above right. The Bibbulmun Track uses an old roadway here.

Above right: Large rockfaces can be seen from the Bibbulmun Track. I went over to have a look for those speed demon skinks that run about them but I only saw one. I did see a nice crop of tiny meat-eating plants (see below). Middle: Lovely views across the valley. Left: Beautiful white flowering bushes.

Above left: There were dozens of these tiny meat-eating plants in dried-out rock pools on a rock face. They are beautiful. They are much smaller than the other flat-leafed variety that you sometimes find in the middle of the Bibbulmun Track. Centre: Also nearby were these white plants. They are very dry, they are very hard, they look like coral, they look like they are made from Chux Super-wipes. Right: Another nice type of flowering bush.

Above left: The Helena Campsite. Two rainwater tanks. In front there is an area of broken rock. The inside view shows 4 bunks, probably fit three to a bunk. Like most campsites there is an inside table setting and also one outside. Below is a view, looking across the valley from inside the Helena Campsite.

Right: Clean and well-maintained toilets.
