Schafer Campsite

Schafer Campsite

March, 2000

The Schafer Campsite on the Bibbulmun Track is easy enough to find and is less than a kilometer from the parking area beside Brook Road. It is about 350 kilometers south of Perth, about 30 kilometers south of Pemberton and about 20 kilometers north of Northcliffe. Despite what the CALM map may indicate Wheatley Coast Road is fully bitumenised. The Schafer Campsite on the Bibbulmun Track is a short detour from Wheatley Coast Road onto a reasonable gravel road along either Hill Road then Brook Road, or the lomg way like I did on Lane Pool Road, then Karri Road then Brook Road.

My trip started at the car park on Lane Pool Road. I walked south from there on the Bibbulmun Track in the wrong direction. I should have taken the map, shouldn't I.

Wising up I drove off to Brook Road, kangaroos all over the place.

Schafer Campsite is named after the originator of the Bibbulmun Track Geoff Schafer, who put the idea to the Government in July 1972.

I thought that this fungus was interesting.

Scott had just arrived after trecking in from Warren Campsite. That's about 21 kilometers. Scott is doing an end-to-end and this is week 5. Like me, he loves it. Something hot to eat. Its a bit wet outside and Scott is eating at the inside table. Some mashed potatoes and some tuna. Scott's next adventure may be as an aide in Bangladesh.

Scott enjoys a view of the lake while eating. In the foreground you can see the ouside table closer to the lake. Nothing like it beautiful country-side fresh air, birds, animals just fantastic, exhillerating. Scott reckons the Cape to Cape down south is a great walk too.

Typical Aussie fence-post

A piece of the Bibbulmun Track about 6 kilometers further south of Schafer campsite where there is a 4 board bridge. The track goes over what looks like mineral sands here.
