Heidi's greatest joy was to make others happy, as was evidenced by her devotion to her family and friends. Her kind heart and gentle ways will be missed by all. Connie was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. She graduated from Logansport High School in 1961, and was the former secretary at Daniel Webster School, and owner of A Stitch in Time. She retired in 2007 from Wachovia Bank as a teller, in Melbourne, Fla. She lived in Melbourne for the past 10 years and had moved back to Logansport in January 2008. Connie was an animal lover of any kind. She loved to cross-stitch, read, entertain and be with her family. Connie had a big heart for giving. Frances retired from General Tire, worked as nurses aide at St. Joseph Hospital, Logansport, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels and elderly care. She was a member of the former Market Street United Methodist Church and Golden Agers. She was a loving mother and grandmother who took great pride in her family. She was a past president and very active in PTA at Longfellow School. She loved spending winters in Eustis, Fla., where she participated in a kitchen band and ballroom dancing. A member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Marge also served as a volunteer at Logansport Memorial Hospital for many years. She had a love for traveling and she and her husband, Don, presented many slide presentations of their travels to church groups and friends. They had traveled to more than 40 countries. She also enjoyed cooking and playing eucre, and especially enjoyed her grandchildren. Over the years, she held numerous administrative positions in the church. Melinda was a member of Met-N-Et Extension Homemakers Club and was an avid supporter of Logansport athletics. She spent much time researching family genealogy and had been an avid mushroom hunter and antique collector. She was a member of the Lafayette Golden Gems Red Hat chapter. Johnson Road, Michigan City IN 46360.(1-6-07) Beth Brumbaugh's mother, Hilda Dalzell Brumbaugh, age 95, formerly of Logansport and Twelve Mile, Indiana, died on August 10, 2006, in Needham, Massachusetts Born on a farm in Twelve Mile, she was the daughter of Luella (Cover) and Dudley Thomas Dalzell. She attended schools in Twelve Mile, and in 1928 moved to Logansport for her senior year at Logansport High School. She attended Indiana University and graduated from Kendall College of Physical Education in Chicago. During the depression years, she was a supervisor for the Governor's Commission on Unemployment Relief, where she was responsible for Cass, Miami, Pulaski, Benton and Jasper counties. She married Norval Brumbaugh of Logansport in 1934, and he preceded her in death in 1980. She was an active member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church Thrift Shop Committee, and a Red Cross Gray Lady. She is survived by her daughter, Beth, of Massachusetts, 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. A memorial service in Logansport will be held at a later date.(1-6-07) ![]() He died at 5:13 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2005, in Logansport Memorial Hospital. Born Aug. 18, 1915, in Huntington, he was the son of Franklin and Bertha Krieg Freehafer. In 1934, he was married to Florence Dunkin, who survives. He had been retired since 1985 when he completed a 49-year career with the Pharos-Tribune. For several years, he served as city editor and an editorial writer. For 25 years, he also served as Cass County Justice of the Peace. After being appointed to the position, he was elected to six terms and served two terms as state president of the Indiana Association of Justices of the Peace. During his years in that office, he married more than 1,000 couples and presided in thousands of civil and misdemeanor cases in his courtroom. After retirement, he resumed his education, becoming a Dean's List student and eventually a substitute teacher in the Pioneer and Logansport school corporations. At age 77, he received a paralegal certification from Indiana University Kokomo, completing two years of law classes with straight As. He served a four-year term on the Logansport Memorial Hospital Board as a Republican appointee and ran for Cass County Commissioner and the Logansport City Council as a Republican candidate. The winner of 10 national mental health awards over a 40-year period, he also received many state awards for his volunteer work to improve treatment of the mentally ill. The most prestigious award came in 1989 when the National Council of Community Mental Health Centers honored him with a memorial award given annually to the individual who has the most outstanding record in the nation in community mental health service. He went on to serve as president of the Four County Counseling Center Foundation. The National Mental Health Association honored him in 1959 and 1962 for his articles and editorials on mental health issues by presenting him with the Mental Health Bell Award, presented to the newspaper that has done the most in the nation to promote the cause of mental health. During the 1980s, he obtained more than 1,000 members for the Cass County Mental Health Association for seven consecutive years. For 28 years, he served on the Indiana Mental Health Association Board and was its state president in 1961. A charter member of the Four County Counseling Center Board, he served as its president from 1971 to 1975 when it was known as the Four County Guidance Center. The board raised $1.25 million in county and state funds for the construction of what today is known as Four County Counseling Center. He was president of the center board from 1975 to 1989. In 1988, the late Gov. Robert Orr named him a Sagamore of the Wabash and appointed him to the Governor's Mental Health Advisory Board. Another former governor, George Craig, appointed him to the Logansport State Hospital Advisory Board in 1953. He was the only charter member of both the Cass County Mental Health Association and the Pastoral Counseling Center boards and was a past president of the latter. He also served on the board of the Cass County Alliance for the Mentally Ill. A 33rd Degree Mason, he was the only person in Cass County with that distinction. He was Cass County ambassador and membership chairman for the Fort Wayne Scottish Rite and a member of the local Tipton Masonic Lodge, the Masonic York Rite and a member of the Legion of Honor of the Order of DeMolay. He also was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church. Ralph graduated from Logansport High School in 1927, where he was a standout basketball player whose team started the Felix mascot tradition. He was also a past National Free-Throw champion. As director of the Chamber of Commerce and president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1965, he was recognized by the Chamber of Commerce of the United States. He was the chairman of the United Fund twice, was a city councilman from 1952 to 1956, and he was the first president of the Grissom Air Force Community Council. Ralph served as past trustee of Market Street United Methodist Church. He went to work for Muehlhausen Spring Company in 1936 as a shipping clerk and retired in 1974 as general manager of Rockwell International. He once quoted: "This job and this company has afforded me the opportunity to do another thing I like and that's help my home town." Ralph was a member of Tipton Lodge #33 F.&A.M., Mizpah Shrine, a member and past president of the Logansport Shrine Club, member of the Logansport Elks Lodge since 1942, two-time president of the Three Rivers Boy Scout Council, and a former member of the National Boy Scout Council, in which he received the Silver Beaver Award in 1950. He was a loving father and was dearly loved and respected in return by his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed playing golf and traveling the United States, Mexico, Guatemala and Canada with his wife in their Airstream. After working in journalism in Chicago for several years, she returned to Logansport and was married to Robert C. Richardson on Nov. 18, 1933. She worked with her husband at the family business, Richardson's Cleaners. Robert died in 1964, and Frances subsequently moved to Indianapolis, where she was a supervisor for the Marion County Welfare Department. On Dec. 23, 1967, she was married to Theodore L. Steele, who she first met while attending the University of Illinois. Following the death of Theodore in 1995, she resided at Marquette Manor. Frances will be greatly missed by her son, Ray Richardson, Greenfield, and her daughter, Carol Marthaller, Romulus, N.Y. Frances' family also includes her grandchildren, Robert A. Mr. Brugh was an ironworker for various companies in the Logansport area, retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Ironworkers of Lafayette Local #379. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Mr. Brugh served from 1959 to 1965, achieving the rank of corporal (E4). He served during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 60 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3790. He was a loving grandfather, father, son, husband, uncle and friend and was truly admired for his skills in everything he accomplished. He was dedicated to his wife and family and was always willing to help anyone who needed it. He loved fishing and spending time in the woods. He loved watching sports and the rodeo. He was a wonderful carpenter. He graduated from Logansport High School in 1959. Mrs. Bailey entered nurses training in Toledo, Ohio, at the Lucas County Hospital and graduated as a registered nurse. She also attended Toledo University and Peabody College, Nashville, Tenn. While she was a supervisor of the Gynecology Department at the Lucas County Hospital, she met and married Dr. Earl Bailey. They were married in Luckey, Ohio, at Grace Lutheran Church on Nov. 29, 1933. Before settling in Logansport in the late 1930s, they lived in Bunker Hill. They moved to Carmel in 1976. Mrs. Bailey had served as president of the Indiana State Medical Auxiliary and on the board of the Logansport YMCA. She had been a member of Alpha Mu Chapter and later became a member of the Indianapolis Alpha Associates Chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa. Mrs. Bailey was a charter member of BV Chapter of P.E.O. and joined Chapter AF of the P.E.O. Sisterhood when she moved to Carmel. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Guild, Home & Hobbie Extension Homemakers Club and Nyona Lake Boosters Club. She also was a Girl Scout leader in Logansport. Surviving are one daughter, Joan Smith and her husband, Art, Winamac; one son, Ron O. Nazerine, Macy; two granddaughters, Deborah Senesac and her husband, Tim, Logansport, and Tracy Harper and her husband, Brian, Winamac; and two great-granddaughters, Alison Senesac and Hayley Harper. Two sisters, one brother and one great-granddaughter preceded in death. (7-28-02) Dale Burrough's mother, Elsie C. Burkholder, formerly of Logansport, died at 5:40 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2002, in Bradner Village Health Care Center, Marion. Surviving are three stepdaughters, Carol Justice, Logansport, Marianne Jones, Galveston, and Jerri Stafford, Galveston; one stepson, John Burkholder, San Diego; one daughter-in-law, Diana Burrough, Marion; one grandson; one great-grandson; eight stepgrandchildren; and several stepgreat-grandchildren. One son, Ivor Dale Burrough, two sisters, and four brothers, preceded in death. (5-8-02) Gary Acton's father, Merl L. Acton, 86, died at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, in Logansport Memorial Hospital. . He was married on Feb. 14, 1937, in Logansport, to Genevieve Woods, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Gary Acton, Ouray, Colo., and Kent Acton, Logansport; four grandsons, Abram Acton, Morgan Acton, Derrick Acton and Kevin Strnatka; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Jackson; one half sister, Margaret Schaeffer, Cincinnati; and four great-grandchildren. One daughter, Elaine Lee Strnatka, one half brother and three half sisters preceded in death. Mr. Acton was a carpenter and belonged to Tipton Lodge 33 and Fidelity 58 and a member of Miami Baptist Church.
