From the Herald Newspaper:

An Ignacio man died this week in a single-car accident while driving on a mountain road northeast of Silverton.
Bryan Graham, 68, drove over a 300-foot-high embankment, said Melody Skinner, an administrative assistant with the San Juan County Sheriff's Office. Graham was ejected, and the car broke into three pieces.
The accident occurred either Sunday or Monday on Maggie Gulch Road (San Juan County Road 23), Skinner said. Graham called his daughter about 1 p.m. Sunday to say he was going to Silverton.
The accident scene was found by a mountain biker who lives in Silverton. Graham drove over a sheet of ice that was visible but very slick, said Colorado State Patrol Cpl. Jared Rapp, who investigated the accident.
"Even if (roads are) not posted closed, it's still treacherous driving," Rapp said.
Skinner warned residents and visitors that the roads around Silverton may have ice that is difficult to navigate. Usually the roads are covered with snow this time of year, she said, but the warm weather has created random ice patches that melt and refreeze during the day.
"A lot of our roads appear to be dry," Skinner said, "but then when you get into shady spots, there's ice. We have serious ice conditions, even if you think it looks like summer up here." (4-23-08)                 Back to Top of Page

Merland died of complications following surgery in 1981 to replace a cancerous kidney.  A bad blood transfusion (this was prior to the blood supply being screened) was responsible for an infection of Hepatitis C.  His death occurred at the R. Roudebush Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis on July 9, 1994.  Merland was often ill from the time of the surgery until his death.
While serving in the U.S. Army for five years, he was somehow poisoned and given a medical discharge and suffered severely from asthma.  Merland was a chef for many years until he was forced to take full disability because of his deteriorating health.
A son John survives, from Merland's second marriage which ended in the 70s; as does his mother who now lives in Nevada, and a sister Ella Line (Bob) who also live in Nevada.  Merland's last love was murdered in Cincinnati, at which time he just seemed to give up on finding that special someone.
A musician in high school, Merland continued to play his trombone in the Army Band; and took lessons from Dave Baker until he could no longer breathe properly.
He is still dearly missed by his mother and sister.
The Hertz-Thomas Funeral Home in Kankakee, Illinois, was in charge of the arrangements and cremation in 1994.
