Auto accident - April 25, 1959
Dick last lived in Logansport
Richard "Goat" was born in Logansport on December 27, 1939. He was employed at the Kroger Store and was attending Indiana University extension classes at Kokomo. He was a member of Main Street Methodist Church. Richard had recently bought a new Renault auto and had just been at Kietzer's drive-in, showing off his new sports car. Richard was very proud of his new car and had saved for sometime to buy it. He was soon driving east on U.S. Highway 24 headed toward Peru with Martin Delaney as a passenger. Just after midnight on Saturday, April 25th, he lost control and crossed the center line, colliding with an oncoming station wagon containing a young couple coming home from a prom. Richard was pinned behind the steering wheel and finally removed to St. Joseph's Hospital in Logansport where he died at 2:20 a.m. His death was due to a crushed chest. He also sustained a broken right leg, neck injury and numerous cuts and bruises. The accident was witnessed by State Trooper John Gaylor who was following the station wagon. The wagon passengers spent some time in the hospital, but lived. Martin Delaney, a classmate of Richard, died of injuries that evening in the hospital.
