Three jailed for terror attacks
YOGYAKARTA: A court here sentenced three men to between three and five years'
jail Tuesday for their roles in two bomb attacks in Yogyakarta in January 2000.
A panel of judges at the Yogyakarta District Court sentenced Wahyu Diarto, alias
Syaifullah, from Cilacap regency, to five years' jail for the Jan. 1 bombing of a post
office and the attempted arson and bombing of the Gede Mosque in Kauman on Jan.
26.
His accomplices, Taufiqurrohman and Muhammad Auwal Suhardi, were jailed for four
and two years respectively for their roles in the attacks.
A pedicab driver was injured in the first blast, while in the second the fire at the
mosque was put out before the bomb inside could explode.
Prosecutors had requested the judges to sentence the three defendants to nine years
each.
The judges said Wahyu received a longer sentence for his role as a bomb-maker and
ringleader of the group, while Taufiqurrohman served as the group's financier and
Suhardi knew about the plans but failed to report them to authorities. --JP
