I think people are split on whether ATE 1 is better then 2 and vice-versa. I thought 2 was better than 1. The only way to find out for sure is to rent the series and watch it. I think it's worth it. I copied my commentary on the series from another post and will paste below. Whether you like ATE 2 or not, I'm sure you'll find that the performances were at least very good. And IMO, it's a pity that they were not given more credit for doing a good job just cuz the ratings & most of the comments/reviews weren't good. Anyway... enjoy the following...
"CONTAINS MINOR SPOILER INFORMATION, read at own risk...
I actually prefered ate2 to ate1. In general, I think ate2 was better paced. I also think that it did a better job of keeping you in touch with what was happening to all the major characters.
I thought ate1 was better than most people seemed to think. Although I liked the premise better than the execution. I thought the end of 1 dragged on a little though especially after Sunny Chan's character's death. I thought it took a little too long with how bad Sunny's character had become. And I thought the setting up of the relationships and major plot points was a little too long too.
Flora Chan's character and Kenix Kwok's characters were also too soft for me, prefering to let things happen to them. Only Lisa Wong's character and Maggie Siu's characters seem more pro-active but they don't appear often enough, especially at the end of ate1.
I thought the women were more interesting in ate2, less wishy washy and more pro-active. Although ada choi's character does waver a bit towards the end with regards to how she deals with her relationships but that is within the logic of the script and acceptable because of her confusion after the lost and subsequent regaining of her memory.
I know some will say that Ada's character is similar to the soft women characters in ate1 but I believe that there is a notable difference, she takes things into her own hands. She also seems more intelligent then Flora's and Kenix's characters in ate1 cuz she's less easily duped.
What I really liked about ate2 is just how the series shows the maturing of most, if not all, the major characters. It's in ate2 that the themes of ate come to fruition. Most of the major characters come to a breaking point and finally find redemption and forgiveness or a different direction. I thought the progression of the characters is better in 2 because in 1 things happen to them and you'll think the characters would learn something but in the end, only Sunny trully learns anything. Although, there is some progression in Gallen's and Roger's characters, their main transformation is in ate2.
Although I know some people think that the plot in ate2 is prepostrous, I actually liked it. I thought that the script was fairly logical, the characters mostly do things or make decisions that are quite in line with what their characters would most probably do. Even how they each reach their breaking point and subsequent transformation is pretty well done. I thought the themes of redemption and forgiveness is also unique. And I really liked it that Louis Koo's character's ultimate downfall isn't revenge but power. Of course nothing that happens in ate2 is realistic. But if we judge the serial based on that then we'll have to say that all serials are bad because I haven't watched a "Secrets and Revenge" soap that is realistic.
Well, those are my thoughts for now, got to dash.
enjoy."
