I agree that Louis initial motivation was revenge. But whether he was really evil is debatable. I think that initially he was bad, wayward, wrong etc but not EVIL. The script actually shows many good points in Lik's character in the beginning, making him a very sympathetic bad guy.

I think Lik trully becomes evil later on in the series. And I think it's actually money and power that corrupt him. This would explain why he was so cruel to Teen Ling (Ada Choi.) When men beat their wives and control them the way Lik did... it's a power thing. I think that's why he continued with his plans even after he found out that Tim was not responsible for Bui's death. And I think that's why he called in his uncle etc so that he could take over Helen's father's business.
