Review - Love on a Diet (2001)
Dir: Johnnie To, Wai Kar Fai
Actors: Andy Lau, Sammi Cheng, Kurokawa
Johnnie To, Wai Kar Fai, Andy Lau and Sammi Cheng reunite again after their
hugely successful partnership in "Needing You."
Andy and Sammi don huge rubber suits and portray and look a far cry from
their usual slim selves. Some of the novelty you'll get from this film is
seeing them so large. The makeup is done by an American firm, can't remember
which one and is for the most part quite good.
The film is set in picturesque Japan. The location is well used and you
never get the feeling that our two protaganists are in an "exotic" new land.
(That's what I like about "When I Look Upon the Stars" too.)
Sammi's character is somewhat similar to her character in "Needing You."
Sort of wacky. Anyway, Sammi plays Mini Mo, a woman who used to be slim
and beautiful. She and her Japanese pianist boyfriend (Kurokaw) were very
deeply in love but he had to leave to go overseas to study music. Left on
her own, Mini Mo kept eating. Now, however, she needs to lose weight quick
because he's about to marry another. At this point in time she meets Fei-Zhai
(Andy Lau) and he will help her to lose weight.
The film is quite fun and funny. It manages to keep the cheap fat jokes
to a minimum and instead concentrates on Fei-zhai's growing affection for
Mini. It also includes among the cast Milkyway regulars Wong Tin Lam and
Lam Shuet and they are quite funny as Fei-zhai's fellow HK buddies who try
and help Mini lose weight in very unconventional ways.
In the end, its a romantic comedy which just happens to have large people
as their protaganists. I had some problems with the ending but not many other
people seem to have. Worth checking out.
next up "Para Para Sakura" ...
