B.  GRACE TELLS MR. DIMITRI ABOUT JESSIE IN THE DESERTED HALLWAY

Grace opens the door of the theatre and walks into the hallway, leaning against the wall.  She looks up and exhales.  Mr. Dimitri walks through the door, into the hallway.  “Alexa?”  Grace immediately stands up straight.  Dimitri sees her and they say “Hi” simultaneously. Dimitri pulls a dollar bill out of his front pocket and chuckles.  “Hi,” Grace says again. “So who knew you had such a great voice?”  Dimitri walks away to the vending machine.  “Yeah, who knew?” answers Grace.  Mr. Dimitri tries to insert a bill.  “(It was) quite an audition.  You should be proud.”  Grace smiles and says, “Thanks.”   “But, I guess you’ll have a lot of competition.”  Dimitri smiles at Grace and straightens his bill.  Grace grins, saying “Yeah, I guess I will.”

Mr. Dimitri tries inserting his dollar bill again.  “Ah, Jessie Sammler is your…step-sister?”  Grace turns her head away.  “Yeah.”  “Do you guys get along?”  Dimitri takes a bottle of water out of the machine and twists the cap off.  “Yeah, yeah.   I mean, you know.”  Grace smiles awkwardly.  Dimitri takes a couple of steps and leans against the machine.  “No.  What?”  Grace answers, “It.can be.awkward.”

“Ah, so this must be real awkward, huh?  Both up for the same part.”  Grace laughs.  “I’m fine with it.”  Dimitri nods and asks, “Really?  And, and, if she gets the role?”  Dimitri sips his water.

“Well, that’s okay.  I mean, she’s good.  She’s really…sensitive.”  Grace looks at Mr. Dimitri, then away.  “Which makes her a good actress.”

“What do you mean?”

It’s just that she’s sensitive…which is good.”  Dimitri listens intently.  Grace glances at him, continuing.  “But it also might make it hard for her.”  Dimitri takes a few steps forward.  “How?  What—how would it be hard?”

Grace looks down.  “I don’t know.  Never mind.”  Dimitri motions, “No, no, no.  What?”  Grace looks at him.  “If she got the part, it might be difficult.”

“Why?”

Grace sighs.  “Because…she’s had some problems.”  Dimitri steps closer, concerned.  “What kind of problems?”

“Well, she had an eating disorder last year.  It was really tough for her.”  Mr. Dimitri listens intently.  “I just hope this wouldn’t be too much pressure.”

Alexa runs into the hallway from another door.  “I just had to go…to my locker,” she explains.  Barely turning, Mr. Dimitri says “Uh huh.  You know, you shouldn’t smoke.”  Alexa runs into the theatre, calling out over her shoulder “I know.”  Mr. Dimitri looks at the theatre door, then back at Grace, pausing as if to say something.  Instead he waits, looks down for a moment, then lifts up his hand.  “Bye, Grace.”  His face is unreadable as he enters the theatre.

“Bye,” she answers, then starts to go forward as if to catch him.  Instead she sighs and walks down the hallway.
