Page 4 - Don't Stand So Close to Me
(The next morning, Grace is wearing a green shirt and Mr. Dimitri is wearing his brown jacket and a red tie and shirt.)
Grace walks into class to find a group of girls clustered around Alexa, whispering. They suddenly stop and look over at her. Alexa clears her throat and they disperse. Grace gives a look like “What?” and walks hesitantly to her desk. A girl in lavender sits in Grace’s seat until Grace stands in front of her and smiling awkwardly, motions for her to get up. Alexa stares at Grace powerfully, unblinking. Grace self-consciously sits in her seat.
Mr. Dimitri walks into the classroom smiling and waving a sheaf of papers. “Okay, forewarned is forearmed.” He starts passing out the papers. “Pop quiz.” Alexa slyly asks “So, Mr. Dimitri, is this what you were doing last night?” Lavender Girl snickers. Mr. Dimitri looks at Alexa. “What?” Alexa shakes her head and shares a knowing look with the girls to her side. “Nothing.” Grace sees Lavender Girl stifling a laugh, then raises her eyes up to her teacher. Mr. Dimitri looks questioningly at Grace, whose face has become scared.
H. KATIE TELLS JESSIE ABOUT THE RUMOR GOING AROUND SCHOOL.
(In the hallway Jessie is at her locker getting books out. Katie comes walking up excitedly to her.)
“Oh.my.God!” Jessie asks “What?” Katie arrives in front of her. “Did you hear? It’s all over school,” she dishes.
“Wait.” Jessie looks around then moves closer to Katie. “You mean about us?”
“No, not us.” Jessie sighs with relief. Katie continues. “Your stepsister…and Dimitri.”
“Oh my God.”
“Apparently they like practically had sex!”
“Are you serious? Wai-“ Jessie scrunches up her face in confusion. “At the movies?”
“I don’t know. But Tad said that Russell said that Alexa said she saw them.”
Jessie takes this in. Katie asks “Are you like totally stunned?” Jessie starts closing her locker, thinking. “Actually no, not totally.” Katie gives Jessie a sly look. “Anyway, why would anyone be talking about us?” Jessie laughs slightly. “I don’t know. No reason.” The two walk off happily.
