| K. GRACE TURNS TO HER STEP-SIBLINGS Grace bursts into Eli’s garage room. “You have to help me.” She finds Eli talking to Jessie. “Oh, sorry.” Jessie excuses herself, “Uh, n-no, it’s okay. I’ll just leave.” “No, stay. You may as well, you probably heard all about it today anyway.” Eli turns around. “Heard all about what?” Grace says, “Oh, she hasn’t told you yet? I’m having an affair…with Mr. Dimitri.” Eli gasps, “Wha-at?” Jessie interrupts. “Eli, that’s not helping.” Grace paces. “I can never go to school again. Ever.” Eli gets up from the bed. “Are you serious?? I mean, do you realize how old he is?” “Shut up!” Grace barks. Jessie gets up from the floor. “Eli, maybe you should just leave.” He protests. “Nya-uh, this is my garage.” “Leave, Eli!” Grace orders, pointing her arm toward the door. “Fine,” Eli slinks out, casting a look back. Grace lets out a breath, covers her eyes, and falls backward on the bed. Jessie sits down next to her and Grace turns on her side, facing away from her. “So, are people like really talking about this?” Grace asks. “No, no, not that much,” Jessie lies. “Now he’s in trouble. I got him in trouble. Which is just the worst feeling!” Grace sits up. “I can’t take this feeling! And now he won’t talk to me at all.” She looks back at Jessie. “What am I going to do?” Jessie comforts Grace. “It’ll be okay.” She puts her hand on Grace’s shoulder. “We’ll figure something out.” Grace nods slightly and sighs. ------ (Later) Grace sits typing at her computer. She nods at the screen and smiles. |
