“Grace, it isn’t that unfair,” Dimitri says gently. “I’m expected—" “No,” Grace insists. “It’s unfair to me.” Dimitri just looks at her. “Because everyone in that entire school thinks we did all this stuff, and we never even got to even do it because you never even let me!” Her voice cracks. Dimitri smiles. Grace steps forward. “Don’t laugh at me!” He melts and tenderly laughs, “I…I can’t help it.” Grace frustration disappears as she shares his gaze. A tear starts down her face as she laughs slightly and looks down briefly. “I read what you wrote. In the book you gave me.” Her expression is full and she manages to whisper, “Thank you.” Dimitri nods a silent acknowledgment. He sinks into a stare. Grace lunges toward him, takes hold of his shoulders, and kisses him, all the passion, pain and pent-up feelings of the last few months showing on her face. The tear leaves her cheek. Dimitri doesn’t move for several moments, then subtly he leans into her. They kiss, together briefly, finally. Grace pulls away, letting go of his shoulders. Dimitri can say nothing. He blinks, open-mouthed, in shock. Grace looks down and laughs. She raises her eyes, suddenly realizing, checking his reaction. “Oh my God.” Dimitri breathes a barely audible “Uh-huh.” A faint smile from his eyes and mouth escapes. Grace looks around, happy. “I’m going home now.” She retreats, picks up her backpack and walks out his door. Dimitri doesn’t turn around. He breathes out and starts to take it all in, what just happened, and what’s to come… |
