"Strong Enough to Break"

I'm sinking but I'm floating away
Throw me a line so I can anchor my pain
The fabric is about to fray
You get just enough to give it way
I start feeling strong enough to break

"Dancin' in the Wind"

Won't deny everything can't last
But it's closing in so fast
Thought that I'd figure it out last
But you can't change the past
Just don't walk away
When I've got you in my arms tonight
And I've got something to say
There are still rules to break
And this music is a place to hide
Isn't it just a game we play
Feels just like we're dancin' in the wind
Feeling just alright
When we're dancin' in the wind we can dance all night

"Believe", Hansen Ünderneath 5/04
I was holding on, now I'm letting go
This is nothing more than a picture show
Everything I knew now I hardly know
Busy keeping less never getting more
One more nickel dime I'm out the door
This kind of life I can't afford
I want to believe
There's something to believe
I would live only just to believe

It's not only me that's longing only just to believe
cause I want to believe
Can't put my mind at ease with the words I say
Trying to get myself to get out of my way
Birds in the trees just make me depressed
Seeing sunny skies, feeling emptiness
Layers of lies just seem to fold
This kind of life is all I know

I want to believe
I will believe
I'd love to believe
I can't believe in nothing
Mr. Grim by Bob Woodroffe 5/03

Mr. Grim our teacher
              Can make your stomach churn
He's got a voice like thunder
              He's very strict and stern.

He rarely smiles, he mostly scowls
              according to a rumor
              that’s because our Mr. Grim
Has got no sense of humor.

But yesterday, I have to say
              It cannot be denied
That when he saw my homework
              He laughed until he cried.

...The soul is
a garden enclosed,
our own perpetual
paradise where
we can be refreshed
and restored.

A Fond Kiss
by Robert Burns  4/20/03

A fond kiss, and then we sever;
A farewell, and then forever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.
Who shall say that Fortune grieves him,
While the star of hope she leaves him?
Me, nae cheerfu' twinkle lights me;
Dark despair around benights me.
I'll ne'er blame my partial fancy,
Nothing could resist my Nancy;
But to see her was to love her;
Love but her, and love forever.
Had we never lov'd say kindly,
Had we never lov'd say blindly,
Never met--or never parted--
We had ne'er been broken-hearted.
Fare thee well, thou first and fairest!
Fare thee well, thou best and dearest!
Thine be like a joy and treasure,
Peace. enjoyment, love, and pleasure!
A fond kiss, and then we sever;
A farewell, alas, forever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee!
Isolate Pools 5/2003

I am blind in my need for You,
my voice stopped by utter longing.

The Little Dry Fork ceases its flow,
becomes a chain of isolate pools.

Words return to silence every moment,
inarticulate bronchial hacking.

Outside the Quaker Meeting,
a wren plays on rain-filmed stone.

Let the one who has visions
be as though he saw dust.

And the one who has no vision—
let her be as if her eyes drank glory.

The dust You awoke
has followed You home again

Confined Love
by John Donne  3/10

Some man unworthy to be possessor
Of old or new love, himself being false or weak,
Thought his pain and shame would be lesser
If on womankind he might his anger wreak,
And thence a law did grow,
One might but one man know;
But are other creatures so?
Are Sun, Moon, or Stars by law forbidden
To smile where they list, or lend away their light?
Are birds divorced, or are they chidden
If they leave their mate, or lie abroad a-night?
Beasts do no jointures lose
Though they new lovers choose,
But we are made worse than those.
Who e'er rigged fair ship to lie in harbours
And not to seek new lands, or not to deal withal?
Or built fair houses, set trees, and arbors,
Only to lock up, or else to let them fall?
Good is not good unless
A thousand it possess,
But dost waste with greediness.
I am still a fool   1/25

Again and again I saw her face
A face that no face could face!
I dreamt of her, I thought of her
She dwelt upon my mind.

I passed my school but was still a fool!
I came to college, she came with me.
Her big round eyes with the shiny black hair,
Such a beautiful they made a pair.

The girls stared and boys stood still
The moment my arms went 'round her neck!
Then somebody from some corner whistled,
She ran, and in a moment was a speck.

My eyes did smart and tears rolled out --
The boys and girls, when they laughed loud.
I could not understand, I could not bear,
How my
little puppy had left me there!
Song
by John Donne  2/10

Go, and catch a falling star,
Get with child a mandrake root,
Tell me, where all past years are,
Or who cleft the Devil's foot,
Teach me to hear mermaids singing,
Or to keep off envy's stinging,
               And find
               What wind
Serves to advance an honest mind.

If thou be'est born to strange sights,
     Things invisible to see,
Ride ten thousand days and nights,
Till age snow white hairs on thee,
Thou, when thou return'st, wilt tell me
All strange wonders that befell thee,
               And swear
               No where
Lives a woman true, and fair.

If thou find'st one, let me know,
     Such a pilgrimage were sweet,
Yet do not, I would not go,
Though at next door we might meet,
Though she were true, when you met her,
And last, till you write your letter,
               Yet she
               Will be
False, ere I come, to two, or three.
A Book
by Emily Dickinson  2/27

There is no frigate like a book
To take us lands away,
Nor any coursers like a page
Of prancing poetry.
This traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of toll;
How frugal is the chariot
  That bears a human soul!
Notes on the Art of Poetry
by Dylan Thomas    1/20

I could never have dreamt that there were such goings-on
in the world between the covers of books,
such sandstorms and ice blasts of words,,,
such staggering peace, such enormous laughter,
such and so many blinding bright lights,, ,
splashing all over the pages
in a million bits and pieces
all of which were words, words, words,
and each of which were alive forever
in its own delight and glory and oddity and light
Song Of The Open Road
by Ogden Nash   1/22

I think that I shall never see
A billboard lovely as a tree.
Indeed, unless the billboards fall
I'll never see a tree at all.
