Dragons
I have seen hundreds of dragons in my life.
They have come in every shadow of life,
As numerous as a child?s fantasies.
Each one shows me something new.

Riding the back of my first
On a lonely winter road,
Feeling his might mass shift beneath me.
Knowing fear, and anticipation.
Trapped in the cold shadow of the next
In a sandy arroyo one starless night.
Winking in and out of existence,
Her blue wings were lined with silver moonlight.

Many years later a great black form
Rose on the horizon
Anger in its eyes,
Its mighty breath careening trees into houses
Leaving swatches of death
Through newly planted fields.
Another?s misty form seeped over skeketal mountains
In an early morning light.
His golden scales strobing; dancing.
Gentle wings forming rainbows.

In my dreams I see them
Bringing nightmares and fantasies,
Phantoms that fill my soul.
Someday I will be a dragon,
Free, elemental; strong as the land and sky.
For now though I am a man,
Looking for my next dragon.
