Irish Stuff
This is a list of somehow Irish things that don't strictly fit on the Prodigals' page. Generally, they are somehow related to the Irish diaspora in America -- especially, the Irish-American "scene" in NYC. If you have any issues with me and my Irish stuff, please read my disclaimer rather than yelling at me, won't you? Thanks so much!
Perhaps it's a cliche to make an Irish page green, but honey, if you've ever been to Ireland, you'll understand. That's the greenest place I've ever been. And when you've been in New York as long as I have, you could use a little green. Just a little green, like the color when the spring is born. Anyway...
Local Irish bands:
The Prodigals: Jig Punk
Seanchai: Rebel Hip Hop. I like Seanchai a lot, but the crowd at their shows has gotten a little annoying lately, so Emma and I don't make it out much anymore.
Black '47: The Grandpappy of kick ass New York City Irish rock
Surrey Lane: Featuring the ever adorable Enda. Enda sent me an e-mail, that sweet man, and notified me that the website has been updated. It has indeed and it is nifty now. You should go see Surrey Lane in person, because they're good, and because, as I have noted, Enda is an ever-adorable fellow. Okay? Okay.
Pat McGuire Band: Sort of low-key Irish alt-rock. There's an Irish alternative to everything.
Other Irish bands:
Mick Mulligan and the Travelers. Based in Florida.
Randomness:
NEW! Denis Leary's Traditional Irish Folk Song This is very funny, so I just typed up the lyrics for you.
Elvis Go Bragh: Dave Barry's take on Ireland. Truer than anyone would care to admit.
Irish Folksongs: lyrics and some melodies of Irish songs. Including some pro-UDA ones. Well, I guess it's in the interest of equal time.
Loretta's Prodigals set list thinger. I'm not obsessed. I'm just thorough.
Rocky Sullivans: Where Seanchai and several other great bands play. It's co-owned by Chris Byrne (that is, the main guy of Seanchai, formerly of Black '47). They offer Irish language lessons in the back room for free on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I'm serious. It's that kind of place. Gotta love it. The website features upcoming events at Rocky's, a trivia game, and an extensive links page.
Paddy Reillys: My personal favorite bar.
About PR-STV, one of the reasons I like Ireland and the only solution I think there is to this electoral college crap we have here in the U.S.
Irish musings:
10/15/00: On Being a Member of the Irish Scene This is old and at this point -- May, 2001 -- innaccurate. But I don't feel like revising it because I'm SOOO lazy.
10/19/00: The Creeping Willies.
