Dirty Old Town
notes:
historical: This song is by Ewan MacColl, an English author/songwriter/politcal activist.
CDs/MP3s: I don't think they've ever recorded their version of this song. They should, though. It's killer.
special Prodigals info: The Pogues do a very slow version. When you hear the first verse of the Prodigals version, you think, oh yeah, slow. But then they get going! I'm so used to that cool punk version that whenever I hear the Pogues' version on the jukebox, I keep waiting for it to kick into gear. But it never does. It's so disheartening. Nothing against the Pogues. But the Prodigals could beat them in a bar fight. :)
Dirty Old Town
I met my love by the gas works wall
Dreamed a dream by the old canal
Kissed my girl by the factory wall
It's a dirty old town, a dirty old town.
Clouds a drifting across the moon
Cats a prowling on their beat
Spring’s a girl in the street at night
It's a dirty old town, a dirty old town.
Heard a siren from the docks
Saw a train set the night on fire
Smelled the spring on the smokey wind
It's a dirty old town, a dirty old town.
I’m going to make a good sharp axe
Shining steel tempered in the fire
Will chop you down like an old dead tree
It's a dirty old town, a dirty old town.
repeat first verse, very drum-heavy, Ray feeding the audience the lines so they can sing along.
