The Auld Triangle

notes:
historical: This song was written by Brendon Behan, (1923-1964), during his stay in the Mountjoy Jail in Dublin. The Royal Canal is a canal that runs from Dublin out west, towards my favorite town, Maynooth. If you don't know why Maynooth is my favorite town, that's because I never told you.
CDs/MP3s: The Prodigals haven't recorded this. What would be the point? The joy is to have everyone in the bar sing along as Ray sings it a capella. He stays mainly on-key, too. It's pretty impressive. :)
special Prodigals info:This is how the Proddys sing it. No, of course these aren't the official words. 9 times out of 10, though, this is how they sing it, so if you don't like it, in the words of Zorak, "you know what you can do." ~_^

The Auld Triangle
A hungry feeling
Came o'er me stealing
And the mice were squeeling
In my prison cell
And that auld triangle went jingle-jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal.

To begin the morning
The screw was bawling
"Get up you bowsies, and clean out your cell!"
And that auld triangle went jingle-jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal.

As the lads lad sleeping,
Gregory Greene lay dreaming
Of days gone by
And his girl Smitha
And that auld triangle went jingle-jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal.

Ray: And this verse is for our drummer-man, Mister Brian Tracy.
Brian and crowd: (Shouts)

In the women's prison (Brian: Yaaa-hoo!)
There are seventy women (Brian: Yaaa-hoo!)
And he wished among them
That he did dwell
Then that auld triangle could go jingle-jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal.

For a slightly more official version of the lyrics, you can always go here. This page even has an MP3 of the Pogues doing the song available, but I've never downloaded it so I can't speak to its quality.
