Weila Waila

notes:
historical: Ray says this happened. I'm sure it did. Also, I've heard that there was this guy once, and he picked up this hitchhiker girl, but when he finally pulled over to let her out, she was GONE!
CDs/MP3s: It's on Go On. I don't have any MP3s available. So buy the CD. If you buy it the guys will sign it and Greg will smile real big and thank you for buying it, I can guarentee.*
special Prodigals info:The Prodigals really kick this song's ass. It's mostly drums and bass. Anyhoo. I've seen other lyrics to this song. For one thing, the "auld" woman sticks the knife in the baby's head, not its heart. And she lives "down by the river side," not the River Saila, but "the River Saila" is what it says in my Prodigals liner notes. There is more detail about the process of hanging her (an additional three verses on the subject) and there's none of that cool "Yes I'm the woman who killed the child!" bit. Which is Andrew's favorite verse. If you want to read the trad lyrics, you can always go here. I mean, I won't stop you.

BTW, it's pronounced "weela-weela-why-la." I used to think they were saying, "We don't need a warrior" and then "don't believe I ever saw ya". Which is much cooler, IMHO.

WEILA WAILA
by, I think, John McGettigan & His Irish Minstrels. But I'm not sure.

And there was an old woman and she lived in the woods
A weila weila waila
There was an old woman and she lived in the woods
Down by the River Saile

She had a baby three months old
A weila weila waila
She had a baby three months old
Down by the River Saile

She had a penknife long and sharp
A weila weila waila
She had a penknife long and sharp
Down by the River Saile

She stuck the penknife in the baby`s heart
A weila weila waila
She stuck the penknife in the baby`s heart
Down by the River Saile

Three loud knocks came knocking on the door
A weila weila waila
Three loud knocks came knocking on the door
Down by the River Saile

"Are you the woman who killed the child?"
A weila weila waila
"Are you the woman who killed the child?"
Down by the River Saile

"Yes I'm the woman
Yes I'm the woman
Yes I'm the woman who killed the child"
A weila weila waila
"Yes I'm the woman who killed the child"
Down by the River Saile

They took her away and they hung her by the neck
A weila weila waila
They took her away and they hung her by the neck
Down by the River Saile

And that was the end of the woman in the woods
A weila weila waila
That was the end of the woman in the woods
Down by the River Saile

*not actually guarenteed.
