5/25/01: It Was There
I was out to see Prodigals last Friday, and I had a bad cold. Boy, was I gone. My voice was half gone and I was coughing up my lungs all the time. But it was fine. I was looped on cough syrup and was feeling okay. So Emma and I went to a diner because we were hungry and the Prods hadn't gone on yet.
So yeah, we were walking down second ave to the diner on 23rd st. I was clearing my throat every ten seconds just to be able to talk.
"I wish they would play Celtic Symphony," I said to Emma.
"They don't seem to play that much anymore," Emma said, by way of agreement.
From behind us, some random nasty men said a random nasty comment. I could reproduce it here, but really, they don't deserve the ink.
"Yeah, and it's really my favorite song to hear. I know that they like to play their originals, but you know... 'Here we go-- again --- we're on the road-- again---' " I talked and sang a little louder than usual to block out the nasty comments. Well, I tried to, but it was hard with all the phlem in my throat.
Emma sang along, and said: "Yeah, it's my favorite, too..." And from behind us the nasty comments continued.
So I cleared my throat, turned around, and spat the phlegm in the general direction of the boys behind us. This surprised them.
Emma looked at me, equally surprised.
"I had to clear my throat," I said. "I mean... it was there, you know? Might as well use it."
"Sure thing," said Emma.
postscript: Back at Reilly's, during the intermission, I asked Greg to play Celtic Symphony for me, and in the second "act," they did. Greg even introduced it saying that they don't usually play this song anymore but they were playing it for me because I asked them to. Isn't that so sweet? The Prodigals are so my favorite Prodigals.
