06/06/03: Santorini: Looking at the Big Sky

Last night we went down to the beach, along a quiet stretch, where you can find some deck chairs and drag them into a companionable circle. We passed around the Fanta bottle full of homemade sangria, and laughed at nothing. I lay on the deck chair, digging my toes into the tiny black gravel that makes up a Santorini beach.

After a while I wandered down to the water and stood in it up to my mid calves. It's very calm because Santorini is crescent shaped and we're on the inside of the crescent, like a huge natural harbor.

And the sky was coming down to meet the ocean, so I couldn't tell where the ocean met the sky, and it was black like velvet, and the stars were like diamonds, and the sky looked so close it was like I was standing inside of the sky, which might have been because I was drunk, but wow. It didn't look real, like it was a green-screen effect in a movie, and I was cut and pasted in front of it.

What is this? What is this place, and who am I? The waves were on my feet, but I didn’t even feel the dampness of it. The water was glowing just a little. Was that the stars? Or those little sea creatures that glow? Or was it just me?
