 Dear Daddy

I came to see you today,
 the weather was beautiful
and the drive down was very pleasant.
I had a lot to tell you,
 but you were very quiet,

 But that's OK Dad,
I didn't mind doing all of the talking.
I came to see you for several reasons Dad,
 I wanted to tell you
how sorry I was for all the wrongs
I have done in my life.

 I wanted to tell you
how much you meant to me
 Throughout my life.
 I wanted to tell you
 how much I love you
And how much I admire you.

 I wanted to tell you
 how much I respect you
 And all you stand for.
 You were very quiet Dad,
 But that's OK,
I didn't mind doing all of the talking.

 I came to tell you
that I wished I had listened to you
 All those years ago
when you tried to help me
 To get my life straight.

 I came to tell you
that I turned forty-two last month
 And I still don't
have anything to show for my life.

I came to tell you Dad, that finally,
 After all these years
 I want to change.
 You were very quiet Dad,
 But that's OK,
I didn't mind doing all of the talking.

 I came to tell you
 that my son graduated
At the top of his class last year, Dad.
 I came to tell you
 that he will make
a fine lawyer for the firm
 He went to work for.

He reminds me a lot of you Dad
 In so many ways.
 I came to tell you
 that I really appreciate
 The man who stepped
 in to raise my son

 I came to tell you
 how sorry I am
 That I let the drugs,
 alcohol and the women
Always come first in my life.

 You were very quiet Dad
 But that's OK,
I didn't mind doing all of the talking.

Dad, I came to tell you
 that the doctors say
 I don't have long
 for this world

 The doctors said,
that my liver is almost gone
 And my heart
 is just tired of trying.

You were very quiet today Dad
 But that's OK,
I didn't mind doing all of the talking.
As I was getting ready to leave
 All I wanted
more than anything in this world

 Was to hear you say,
"Son, sit down and talk to me".
 I knew that was impossible,
Dad you left us ten years ago
 And Dad I miss you.

 I put your roses
on your grave and turned to go
And as I did I thought,
I heard you call my name

And ask me to sit down and talk awhile.
Dad, it was only the wind
You were very quiet today Dad
 But that's OK,
it's about time I did the talking.
