It took some time (and $) but I finally got my first roadracing license in March 1999! Hooray!

In 1999, I raced a 1985 Yamaha RZ350 at Shannonville Motorsport Park...

I was the fastest roadracer from Belleville in 1999!

(and the only one)

I was the fastest competitor on a stock RZ!

(there were two other guys...)

But seriously, if I had managed to reduce my laptimes by 10% on ANY of the four
Shannonville track configurations, I would have broken the lap records for
RZ Cup and Lightweight Supersport - and that was on a stock motorcycle!

(Stock except for Boysen reeds, that is)

"Faster, smarter, smoother, and safer."
- Steve Crevier, 1991

The above quote was my mantra at the track, and it worked well.
Thanks, Steve, for the inspiration!

My other inspiration was watching Frank Mrazek in action in 1997.
He buried the competition, and was in his early sixties at the time -
so I figured that maybe I wasn't too old to race after all!

I also had four goals for my first roadracing season :

  1. Have fun
  2. Learn something every lap
  3. Not finish in last place
  4. Not crash

(Well, I managed to achieve the first three!)
