Club History Page 1: | ||||||||||||
Lough Lene Gaels hurling club was founded late in 1969 as a result of an amalgamation between the Collinstown and Glenidan hurling clubs. Their first ever match in the Westmeath Senior Hurling Championship resulted in a 5-17 to 5-1 win over Delvin in July 1970. Their first honour came early in 1972 when the delayed 1971 Junior hurling league final was won. Raharney were defeated 4-10 to 2-3 in that particular final. Their first championship honour came in 1973 when the Junior title was won by defeating Castletown-Geoghegan 7-3 to 2-3 in the final The long awaited breakthrough at senior level came in 1975 with victory over Raharney in the final. The senior title was retained in 1976 before another first was achieved in 1977 when the club won its first ever championship at underage level, namely in the U-14 grade. Throughout the 1980's Lough Lene Gaels picked up championships titles on a regular basis in the U-21, minor, U-16 & U-14 grades. But a third senior title eluded the club during the 1980's. The 1990's started well for the club with U-21 and U-16 titles being won followed by 3-in a row sequence of championship successes in the minor grade. 1996 was a glorious year for Lough Lene Gaels as the club won their first ever U-12 championship namely in the "A" grade. On Sunday October 13th 1996 the wait of a generation finally came to an end for Lough Lene Gaels as they won their third SHC title, defeating Castletown-Geoghegan 2-7 to 0-9 in the final at Cusack Park Mullingar. Incidently the club won the MHC final the same day making it a very special day for the club. In the time that has since passed Lough Lene Gaels have won further titles in the senior, U-21, minor, U-16 and U-12 grades. Lough Lene Gaels won the last SH championship of the 20th century, defeating Castlepollard 1-13 to 1-11 in an exciting final at Cusack Park on Sunday October 24th 1999. The last U-21 championship of the 20th century was also won by the Gaels on December 5th 1999 at Cusack Park. Oliver Plunketts were defeated by 3-5 to 0-8 in that particular final. Overall the close to mid-term future looks encouraging for the Gaels as the first steps are taken in the 21st century. Another glorious chapter in the history of the club was completed on Sunday September 17th 2000 with the winning of the Westmeath SHC for the third year in sucession. In the final Lough Lene Gaels defeated their neighbours and great arch rivals Castlepollard on a 3-8 to 0-14 scoreline at Cusack Park LOUGH LENE GAELS HURLING CLUB, CLUB HISTORY 2001 TO 2008 Moving to 2001 Lough Lene Gaels Hurling Club was looking to win the Westmeath S.H.C. for the fourth year in sucession. The purple and golds qualified for the semi-finals following victories in the league phase over St. Brigid's, Raharney and Cullion. However, they became unstruck in their semi-final clash with Clonkill, losing out by a one point margin. The Gaels were also out of luck versus Clonkill in the 2000 and 2001 JH 'A' championship finals, both played in 2001. The Lough Lene Gaels Minor squad qualified for the 'A' championship final in 2001 losing to Clonkill. The year 2001 was not all doom and gloom and despite also losing the premier U/21 H.C. final against St. Oliver Plunketts, the purple and golds stunned newly crowned champions Clonkill in the delayed final of the 2000 Feis Cup hurling competition, 2-10 to 1-7. The club also won the A.C.H.L. Division 3 final, played in Clonkill. The major highlight for the club in 2002 was without a shadow of doubt, the winning of the Westmeath S.H.C. title. The scoring of two late goals gave Lough Lene Gaels victory over Castletown Geoghegan in a high scoring dramatic decider. In 2003, Lough Lene Gaels had their interest in the Senior, Intermediate and Junior 'A' hurling ended at the semi final stages in each case. The major highlight of 2003 was the winning of the U/12 'A' championship as Castlepollard were overcome in a great final played in Cusack Park. 2004 was a year in which the club qualified for the Senior and Junior 'A' championship finals. However the Gaels had to settle for the runners up position in both deciders, namely to Castletown and Raharney respectively. However, the clubs U/14 squad won the league and Westmeath Feile na nGael competitions in 2004, thus ensuring that 2004 did not finish empty handed for the club. |
