OUR HISTORY
1947 Whangarei Junior Boy's Band
THE WHANGAREI BRASS BAND   was formed about 1883, and was originally brought and has latterly been restored to a state of excellent efficiency by Mr Chissell.  When he resumed control early in 1900 the membership had fallen to six, but he has now (March 1901) increased it to twenty four, and has sixteen of the new members under his special instruction.  Mr Chissell has also been instrumental in obtaining a first-rate uniform for the band, which is now in a position creditable to itself as the garrison band of Whangarei.

Also found information on Mr Chissell as follows.

CHISSELL,  CHARLES HENRY,  Hairdresser and Tobacconist, Cameron Street, Whangarei. Bankers, Bank of New Zealand.  Mr Chissell commenced business in January 1891, in a two-storey building, where he keeps a full stock of pipes, many brands of tobacco, cigars and cigarettes, besides and endless variety of sundries.

He also imports direct a large and varied stock of musical instruments, such as violins, flutes, accordions, etc., and also does exceedingling well at repairing umbrellas.
Mr Chissell was born in London in 1864, where he was apprenticed to his trade, but emigrated to Australia in 1882.  Eighteen months later he came to New Zealand, and after spending a short time in Napier started business in Waipawa, where he had a successful career of five years.  In January 1891 he came to Whangarei and established his present business.

Musical matters have always been a source of interest to Mr Chissell.  Whilst in Napier he was a member of the Garrison Band, and is now the capable and energetic bandmast of the Whangarei Garrison Band.
He is a member of the Philharmonic Society and has taken a prominent part in the production of operas, oratorios, and cantatas.
Mr Chissell is a Mason and an Oddfellow, and takes more than a general interest in sporting matters,  particularly cycling.  In which latter connection he acts as local agent for the best makers in the world, and has a well fitted workhop for executing necessary repairs to machines.  He also keeps a complete stock of bicycle accessories.
