bought their homeplace, from James & Mary Cole, on March 6, 1858. It is safe to assume (unless there is evidence to the contrary) that all the children born after the 1858 date of purchase were born there --- at Tedders, KY (although not called that yet). THEY WERE NOT BORN IN CLAY COUNTY! I assume that Grandpap planted his first crop there as soon as he bought the land. We know from the 1860 census that the family certainly lived there by that time - and that the 68-year old patriarch, Isaac (born NC), lived with them. |

is sometimes listed, by mistake, as Polly Taylor. Even an 1860 census listed her as "Polly," but her family and relatives never called her that. She was "Aunt Pop," and even her son, Sam Gilbert, was referred to by the old people as "Sam Pop," to distinguish him from other people named Sam Gilbert! Wallace and Aunt Pop both are buried at the Gilbert Cemetery on top of the mountain overlooking the former estate of the elder Wallace Gilbert, on Big Richland Creek, just as the creek branches off to Mt. Ararat in one direction and Tedders on the other. The above dob's and dod's were copied from their tombstones. |

The tradition that I heard as a child (from the people who took care of Clayborn "Grandpap" in his old age) is that her father made a trip to Arkansas before she was born - and thus the reason for her name. Interesting, in light of the fact that his brother later migrated to Arkansas. By the way, the name was pronounced like the state of Kansas, but with the "ar" prefixing it ... "ar-KAN'-ziz." Buried at the Taylor Cemetery at Blackwater. |
(and later of Ant'ny and Laurie), at the mouth of Knocking Rock Holler, Tedders, Knox Co, KY. Photo was taken in June 2001. Look carefully and you can see the hewn logs where the boards are missing. The top part of the chimney has fallen. I couldn't get a close-up photo because of weeds and snakes, and (so I was told) a nest of bobcats! -Glenn Perry |

He was so brilliant! He had a "picture mind" (my mother's words). He became a doctor by learning from working with Dr. Tye (the old- fashioned way), not by going to medical school. He "stole his wife," Lena [i.e., they eloped], when he was teaching in Colorado. She died at Uncle and Mama's [Jackson and Barbara Tedders's] house on Bull Creek when they were staying with them. She was getting ready to return to Colorado to visit her family for the first time, but she died in childbirth. Dr. Clabe loved his relatives. He would embrace Uncle [his cousin, Jackson Tedders] when they met He stayed with Mama and Uncle [Jackson and Barbara Tedders] when Mama taught school at Bull Creek. The Great Depression had begun, and Dr. Clabe was hospitalized for cancer. He had $5,000 left, and all of this easily would go to pay his hospital bills, leaving nothing for his wife and children. In order not to deprive his family after he was gone, he ended his life by jumping out of the third floor of the hospital. [Compare with the newspaper account below.] |
newsclipping taken from the "Barbourville Mountain Advocate" of June 26, 1931, Page 1 The news item failed to list among Clabe's survivors his father, Jake Taylor. The final paragraph states (in part) that "The body ...was taken ...to his home at Tedders for burial." What was meant is that he was first taken home to Tedders from Louisville, then on to Blackwater for burial at Taylor Cemetery. |

lived and farmed at the home place most of his life, both before and after his father's death, but moved to Barbourville, KY, during his later years. The place where he was born was part of the extensive land holdings of his grandfather, Clayborne Taylor. The hewn log house, in which both Anthony and his father Jacob lived, is still intact. The house and land are currently owned by Charles Parrott, grandson of Charlie & Lucy (Woolum) Parrott. Lucy is daughter of Sam & Mary-Pop (Taylor) Woolum. Sam is the brother of Antny's grandmother, Sally (Woolum) Taylor. Mary-Pop is the sister of Antny's grandfather, Clayborne Taylor. Sam's and Sally's parents are Jacob & Sarah (Hughes) Woolum. Mary-Pop's and Clayborne's parents are Jacob "Isaac" & Rhoda (Smith) Taylor. |
