E. Messer with forty armed men of the Slusher party, arrived from Flat Creek yesterday, and caused a great alarm. Circuit Court being in session, Judge Boyd place a strong guard around the court house. But notwithstanding this the factions opened fire in the court house yard, using Colt's 45-caliber revolvers. William Day, one of the Smith faction, received a dangerous wound in the leg, and Messer's clothing was pierced. The presence of the guards and the falling snow prevented further damage. Before embarking, for their return the Messer party threw cartridges into the stove at the depot and when asked by the agent to desist, drew knives and carved the stove pipe. |

As shown by the list of names in her brother's, William Taylor's, ledger, she was called "Polly." But from what I remember hearing from the older generation, she also had the nickname "Pop" (like other Marys, including her niece as well as some in the Woolum family). It is true that she was buried at the Black Cemetery at Callahan (further down Big Richland Creek, closer to Barbourville), as she was then staying with her daughter, Lucy (Woollum) Parrott (the Parrott family came from the Callahan area, although in later years they too lived at Tedders). The intention was to move Aunt Pop back to the Woolum homeplace at Tedders, Big Richland, Knox County - to be laid to rest alongside her husband - when weather permitted the following spring, but that never was done. However, Uncle Sam Woolum is buried alone at the Woolum homeplace at Tedders (later the home of his daughter, Lucy Parrott, and then, until the late 1960s, of Lucy' son, Wm. McKinley Parrott). A lot of people are mistaken about Sam's place of burial, but his great-grandson, Charles Parrott, tells me that he used to take care of Sam's grave.
