The Value of

Zero

A thesis on a uniquely omnipotent value and the

Impact it poses on the spectra of life.

The value ‘zero’ is a potent unit of measure. It is often regarded as a ‘null’ or ‘void’ when taken merely for its face value. Though the terms null and void are accurate terms for defining zero, this assessment taken in full is incomplete. In veracity, the ‘concept of zero’ itself defines and encompasses aspects of most all things existing as well.

Zero as a defining unit of measure

The zero is a figure used in infinite combination with nine other units of measure. Together these units, referred to as whole numbers, are organized in order of ascension and in descending order and formulate mathematical expressions capable of defining anything from music to fractal geometry. What though defines these units?

It is easily recognized how the zero can add power to these units by its purposeful placement. It is also a given that ‘the value zero’, utilized in certain mathematic operations, can diminish or nullify these units.

For instance, when zero is placed after a whole number, it becomes a marker for the raising of power to the unit it is paired with. Correspondingly, zero placed before a unit causes its fracture. As a result, power of the unit decreases through the effect of the ‘zero mark’. Furthermore, any number used in an expression with the zero receives an effect.

1(0)=0; 0/1=0; (-)1/0=(-)infinity;

1+0=1; 1-0=1

Imagine what would happen if the value of this key figure were removed. Although all of the remaining numbers would retain their placement as evenly spaced, one from the next, there would be no way of determining the actual ‘value’ of any given unit. Often overlooked, ‘zero’ gives validity to all numbers stemming from it.

Compare the result of removing another powerful numeral from its place in the number line. A powerful figure with a high profile for its widespread usage and prime position is the number one.

One may be viewed as a key integer that adds value to the ‘zero’. Binary Code is an example of the ‘power of one’. In its absence, though, other numbers can assess a value to ‘the zero’, such as ‘the two’. Through mathematic interpolation, the number two can retain singular value by counting numbers in even increments emanating from a base starting point, zero.

Cultural use of the Zero Concept

Throughout history, ‘zero’ has played a role in explaining and defining spiritual and philosophical concepts. A comparable ideology retains prominence throughout all cultures and disciplines by acknowledging beginning and end, or point of fulcrum.

One such belief, described as “The Middle Way” by an individual named Guatama, explored how to reach enlightenment or “Nirvana” which was an achievement of balance in life by avoiding extremes. This Nirvana thus serves as a point of reference such as does ‘the zero’.

Similarly, Confucius authored a book on “Chung Yung” or ‘The Doctrine of the Mean’. His writings explored developing human nature through moderate means. Cultivation of personal life is seen as the ‘root’ or ‘foundation’ of every individual existing.

Ancient Chinese Taoists promoted another view named “Wu Chi”. This concept represents a perpetual creative cycle of life from beginning to end. ‘The Absolute’, as it is also identified is “the ultimate void”. It is expressed pictorially as a regular circle closed full round, containing nothing.

The symbolic circular form of zero is found in the basic beliefs and underpinnings of Wiccan and Hindu philosophy as well. Use of ‘the zero’ exists as the foundation of culture and ritual.

Before the Beginning

‘In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.’ There exist various beliefs and theories concerning the beginning of all. One popular theory is “the Big Bang” theory - continual expansion of the universe. Scientists and astronomers have the ability to trace the history of the universe back to its origin by charting the motion of matter scattered throughout space. All of this physical evidence points to a starting point conceived to mark the beginning of order in general.

It has been theorized that before the start of all, an accepted and recognized ‘zero mark’, what existed was a static chaos. Therein, all things had an infinite and unorganized standing. Light, matter, and time, were among many tools that would only have purpose and function after having been designated as such. In the same way, ‘the concept of zero’ was subject to the same need for purposeful designation.

There exist designated times for all occurrences that take place and at the beginning of each happening, there exists a zero, an inception, a starting point. Additionally, at the completion of each occurrence is a zero found. With omnipotent prerogative, ‘zero’ stands alone as a truly unique value.

Faith, Hope, Love

If in the future, time indefinite were to become defined, and static chaos were revisited, what would be left remaining, is that which was present before the beginning. In the Bible at 1 Corinthians 13: 1-13, a glimpse of the persona of forces active in establishing concepts and regulations such as ‘the value of zero’ is given.

‘The concept of zero’ can be used in the understanding of individual personal value toward the Creator. To have privilege of representing a position in the ‘eyes of God’, even if it amounts to nothing at all, can be a powerfully rewarding and valued experience.
