Alexander's teacher.Aristotle was one of the most important Greek Philosophers. He was one of the greatest thinkers in the world and his written texts encompassed all major areas of thought. He was born at the Greek City Stageira In Chalcidiki. His father Nicomachos was a doctor. Aristotle learned from his father the first education about physics and medicine. In Athens he learned mathematics in Plato's Academy. Nicomachos was the personal doctor of the Greek king of Macedonia Amyntas 2. This is the reason why Aristotle had good relations with the Greek kingdom of Macedonia. In 342 B.C. Aristotle was invited to the Philips' Palace to become the teacher of Alexander the Great. Aristotle teached Alexander about Homer and used the story of the hero Achilles as an example of the generosity that a King should have. Alexander was influenced very deeply from Achilles, and he believed that Achilles was his ancestor and he always wanted to be like him. About his teacher Alexander was saying: "To my father I ought my living, to my teacher I ought my well living." When Alexander had grown and had become king, he helped Aristotle to organize his school. Alexanter had scientists who followed him in his expedition against the Persians and he was sending their scientific information to Aristotle. When the Lamian war started, Aristotle had gone to Chalkida where he had some land. He died there in 322 B.C. his body was buried in Stagira. |
