| Alexander's mother. She was daughter of Neptopolemos. King of Molosses,Epirus, Greece. She is cosidered that she asked the most influence in creation of Alexanders' personality. Alexander was not the only son of Philip, and she was not the only wife of Philip. Therefore there was strong ties between Olympias and Alexander. She was a dynamic woman but she had also a dark side, a mystic and avenging character. When she was young, she was taking part in Dionysiac religious ceremonies and in the Greek mysteries of Samothrace. In Samothrace she met King Philip. At 358 B.C. she was married with King Philip 2 and she became queen of Macedonia.They had 2 children, Alexander 356 B.C. and Cleopatra 355 B.C. When Philip was leaving for war, She was governed the Macedonian kingdom. Philip helped her brother to take the throne of Epirus. Her relationship with Philip was not always very good because Philip married other women later. When Philip married Attalus daughter, Cleopatra, 338 B.C, Olympias left from Macedonia and she returned to Epirus. At 331 B.C. she was in battle with Antipatros who was always her enemy, and she ruled Epirus until 319 B.C. She supported the rivals of Cassnadros in Macedonia and she did persecutions against her rivals. In 316 B.C. Cassandros won her in Pydna, he arrested her and killed her. Her tomb is possibly located in Macrigialos Pieria, Greece. |
