Parmenion is one of the most important generals in the Armies of Philip and Alexander. He was son of Philotas and his family was aristocratic. After Philip's death, Parmenion with his soldiers joined the army of Alexander and Parmenion became second commander of the army. He was older than Alexander and was very careful in his moves. He advised the king and tried to change Alexander's mind when Alexander was dealing with the Persians in a risky way. Parmenion played a key role in the battle of Gaugamila where as comander of the left wing of Macedonian Army resisted against attacks of Persians and he didn't allow them to surround Alexander's soldiers. Although Parmenion was until that time Alexander's friend, later happened a tragic incident that destroyed the friendship of two men. In 330 B.C. Parmenion's son Philotas who was Alexander's friend was blamed for conspiracy against the king. Philotas was leader of Alexander's bodyguards who had the name "Etaeri" The Etaeri did the conspiracy and Philotas was arrested although he insisted that he was innocent. finaly Philotas was executed. After Philota's death the relations between Parmenion and Alexander became very bad. When the old general had became commander in garrison of the city Ecvatana he was blamed also for conspiracy against the king, although there was no evidence. After that he was arrested and executed too with order given by Alexander. |
