| Alexander's father. Born in Pella. He was King of Macedonia, Greece. Philip became Greek King of the Macedonian throne at the age of 23. He changed the history of Ancient Greece. Philip was the first Greek who dreamed a united Pan-Greek state. He wanted to unite all the independent Greek city states in one Greek state consisted only by Greeks. Macedonians were Greek people. The monarchy in Macedonia was different from Athens which was democratic. The Macedonian language was Greek dialect and the Macedonians were speaking Greek as mother tongue. Philip tried to protect his northern borders and make the situation stable in the interior of his Greek kingdom. He organized the Macedonian Army and he created the Macedonian Phalanx. He had as model the Theban army "Hieros Lohos" (holy company). The first move of King Philip was to make his Greek kingdom stronger than the Athenian city state because he wanted to be the leader of the Greeks instead of Athens. He was in war with Athenians and this war was called 3rd "Hieros Polemos" (3rd Holy War). This war ended In 349 B.C. and the peace was called Amfictyonian Peace. After this peace Philip continued his plans to become leader of Greece. In the Battle of Chaeronia Philip was victorious. After his victory he united all the Greeks together (the Macedonians were Greeks). After the Greek unification in one state, all the Greeks (exept Lacedemonians from Sparta) decided to start a war against Persians with leader King Philip. The preparations for this war started immediately and in the Spring of year 336 B.C. Philip sent 10000 soldiers under command of General Parmenion to the area of Hellespont. However Philip was murdered by Pausanias in the city Aiges. During the celebration for the marriage of his daughter Cleopatra, Philip was walking alone without guards and the guard Pausanias attacked him from behind killed him. The tomb of Philip was found in Greek city Vergina by the archaeologist Manolis Andronikos. | ||||||||||
