Download programs and drivers
Due to the inability to upload executable files on Yahoo!'s web pages, I have provided a link to my web page at Angelfire which has the Windows 95 drivers for Zenith Data System's Z-player (very hard to find) and Microsoft's registry cleaner program also for Windows 95. Please click on the link to that page. May's page of downloads at Angelfire. Oops! I am having problems getting them uploaded at anglefire. Please bear with me while I try to sort it out. In the meantime, please leave me a note in the guestbook and I'll email them to you. Sorry. Anti-virus program: AVG anti-virus Due to the mass amount of viruses floating out there, I think it is very important that every computer user does his/her due dilligence to ensure that his/her computer is clean of any virus and do preventative measures from its propogation. I have found a great free anti-virus program that isn't a spyware (at least I haven't found it to be). It's called AVG Anti-virus system. It's very easy to install and update and unlike McAfee's online scan, it doesn't periodically come up with conflict error messages on my computer. Get your free anti-virus download at: www.grisoft.com. There are other anti-virus programs out there that are free such as F-prot. But, beware of Trend Micro's House call!!! This seems like a spyware program. It loads via javascript and inserts logs and extra bits of files into your hard drive, namely the Windows directory. For something that loads too much stuff on my hard drive for a free online scan, I don't think it's worth my time. I ended up having to delete every trace of Trend Micro's files from my drive. Firewall: Zone Alarm For those people who are on a high speed broadband internet connection, getting a firewall is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. All you need to do is go on the internet and immediately, you can be infected with the MSBlaster worm or other similar nasty programs. And, unfortunately, there are lots of people who have bot programs running that scan ip addresses and ports for a non-firewall protected computer. My suggestion is to get both a hardware firewall, like a router AND a software firewall program, like Zone Alarm. That way, the router will physically block intrusions into your computer AND your software firewall will prevent any viruses or spyware from getting out to the internet and infect others. Zone Alarm firewall Anti-Spyware: SpywareBlaster, Spybot Search & Destroy There are lots of nasty programs out there that are called "spyware". What they can do is track what you do, where you surf, and even keylogging, logging the keystrokes you make on your computer. All it takes is for you to go to a website where they can install such spyware programs without your knowledge and you're infected. Or, if you click on a phishing email that claims to be from your bank, Ebay, Visa, etc, that tells you to verify your identity or that your account has been compromised. The link may look like it's from ebay, but it's not. Something gets installed on your computer and then, you'll soon notice something bad happen to your bank account, or credit card, etc. So, protect yourself. Download and install SpywareBlaster to PREVENT spyware from being installed (make sure you update it periodically to keep up to date). Download and install Spybot Search & Destroy to SCAN your computer for all the hidden spyware that you have installed and didn't know about. Believe me, you will find something on the first scan. SpywareBlaster Spybot Search & Destroy Homepage Hijacking monitoring sofware: Winpatrol If you visit many websites a day, you may not know when something has been installed or that your homepage has been hijacked and changed. WinPatrol and other similar programs will detect any changes to your Windows Startup and homepage among other things so that you know something fishy is going on. WinPatrol And lastly, keep yourself informed on the latest phishing techniques and emails that are currently circulating so that you won't be a phish victim. Check out this website and some of the archives. Some phish emails look SO AUTHENTIC that anyone can be fooled. AntiPhishing.org Free stuff and other money making sites!
