Jock Mackenzie is a descendant of Alexander and Catherine Mackenzie who emigrated to the Hawke’s Bay area of New Zealand from Kildonan, Loch Broom. His family links into several of the houses of Mackenzie including Ballone, Gruinard, Dundonnell and Coigeach. Born in New Zealand of a Scottish born father, Alexander Mackenzie and a second generation New Zealand mother Iris Ross, the main line is Scottish. Brought up on a North Island sheep Station he joined the New Zealand Air Force during W.W.II. He continued in flying being one of the aerial topdressing pioneers. Later he purchased his own farm, “Glenarigolach’ and here developed a herd of Highland Cattle. Jock has had18 volumes of poetry published. He is married to Sonia and they have raised a family of four daughters and one son. |

Sonia Mackenzie, wife of Jock, is a quarter Scottish is from Clan McEwen but in the 1400’s there is a Mackenzie. Scandinavian is the other nationality here. She is a fifth generation New Zealander, the McEwens being emigrants on one of the first four ships. Thirty-five years of interest of genealogy has brought about a business producing charts and family history books. |

Jim Thwaites is a descendant of Kenneth and Catherine Mckenzie of Fortrose, Southland, New Zealand. Mackenzie’s and McLean’s on his Scottish side from the Lochbroom area, Loggie, Kildonan village and Badrallach. Born in New Zealand and always interested in his family beginnings. He served in the Army during WWII. Jim a lifetime dairy farmer, he is now retired. A member of the New Zealand Dairy Board for 19 years and for 12 years a councillor with the Jersey Cattle Breeders Association, his M.B.E was an appreciation for his valuable work in this field. Jim is a keen Bowler and a member of the R.S.A & K.E.V. He is married to Betty, nee McLeod, and they have raised a family of four sons and one daughter. |
Donald and Ann McKenzie come from ‘Greenbush’, Fortrose, Southland, New Zealand. Donald is the great grandson of Kenneth George and Catherine McKenzie who emigrated from Lochbroom. He is of the same family as Jim Thwaites. Kenneth and Catherine were married in Ullapool 25/9/1860 and sailed immediately for New Zealand, purchasing the farm ‘Greenbush’ in 1865. Donald had farming in his blood and is the fourth generation to farm this property. Donald married Ann, (nee Hall) a nurse from a farming background and they have three sons. Scott and Benjamin are farming with Don. Second son Lachlan has chosen banking as a career but travelled to Gallipoli for the Commemoration ceremonies in 1990. Ann who is also of Scottish descent, is a keen gardener and has a great interest in genealogy. |
