Heretic

Heretic was probably the first FPS I ever played.  I know that it was the first FPS that I played multiplayer.  This game seemed at the time to be excellent.  Now, however, I do have some complaints.
First, the good stuff.  It had a pretty cool theme to it, even if that theme seemed to often be a bit confused.  The weapons were fun to use, and multiplayer was excellent, so long as you stuck to certain levels.  The game was probably made a lot more fun by the people we were playing with.  The Gauntlets of the Necromancer would never have become the symbol they are today if it weren't for Brian and "shiny-shine."  Similarly, the "ogg" wouldn't have been as hilarious if not for the reactions from the players being ogged (and the guys hosing down the chicken... hey, that sounds dirty huh?).  Yes, the Ogg (aka Morph Ovum) was the best thing about this game.  In case you've never ogged anyone, the Morph Ovum was an item that when activated fired off a spray of eggs in a shotgun pattern.  If someone was hit by this blast, they became changed into a chicken.  This meant that their hit points went way down and their weapon was replaced by a beak.  They would immediately try to run, but their constant clucking would give them away.  Meanwhile, certain suicidal chickens might charge in and count on the clunkiness of keyboard controls to get under your sight and peck at your ankles.  Usually though the ogged player was so stunned by his sudden polymorphosis that he kindly stood still long enough for you to blow him away with your Hellstaff (the l33t Heretic player's choice firearm).
So except for oggs, Hellstaves, and Gauntlets of the Necromancer, this game didn't have much going for it, did it?  Well, it did have one opponent worth mentioning.
Not the rock creature, gargoyle, or axe thrower, which all behaved basically like the average video game bad guy.  However, the "wizard guys" (which behaved like normal video game characters) at least had attitudes.  This attitude was evidenced by their constant mockery of the player.  Despite some players I've read that insist that they're saying normal phrases backwards, liberal listening and a willingness to believe leads to this list of sayings I remember:
"He's stepping on your feet."  This could also end with "cheeks", depending on who's hearing it.
"He's invincible, not us."

I thought I knew more but I appear to have forgotten.  Maybe you remember, if you've played Heretic.  If however you were spoiled by DOOM, well, then you're useless to me.  Sorry.
