Jack Strange lives up to his name. He is completely unpredictable, and is as likely to try to cut up your party as join it. Conversely, he can inexplicably decide he likes you and be a loyal and true friend... at least for a while. Jack moves through the lands wherever he wants, staying away from those who seek to bring him to justice and lingering in places where he is viewed as a hero for his triumphs over evil. Truly though he holds neither good nor evil close to his heart, and acts according to his own inscrutable reasons.
Some people say that a terrible tragedy in his past destroyed his mind and drove him to try to become an adventurer, but his fractured brain could never work properly long enough to achieve this. Others say that a mysterious maiden once kept him together, but her sudden death or disappearance drove him over the edge. The truth is that Jack is certifiably insane, but strives to minimize the disadvantage this causes by faking many other neuroses that he doesn't have. Exactly what is wrong with him and what he fakes is a subject of much debate among those who deal with him.
Despite his strange nature, he has occasionally joined a party of adventurers and done good deeds. He has even risked his life, perhaps foolishly, to save his fellows when the occasion called for it. Unfortunately he has also done some pretty impressive crimes. Additionally, he has proved to be just as likely to wander off and leave his party in the lurch as stand beside them and fight until the end.
To those who can put up with him, "Laughing" Jack could be the best and truest friend they ever met. He could also be a total loss... but you'll never know until you give him a chance.
Origins: I've always been intrigued by the thought of a chaotic neutral character, and making up "Laughing" Jack seemed to be a good way to explore this alignment. I was also influenced by the insane voice in the NWN voice set. The name came in parts. I love the name Jack because it reminds me of the Ripper, which makes anyone with the name Jack sound dangerous. "Laughing" seemed like an awesome nickname because it sounded so friendly and carefree, which hints at darker things going on below. Finally, the last name Strange just sounded good when combined with the rest of the name. It also seemed to fit the character just fine.
