Flutie Nearly Confounds Eskimos Despite Rough Play
Flutie avoided sacks nearly the whole game, and rushed for first downs, and scrambled around in the pocket to make some incredible deep throws. With Calgary up 14-7 and about to tack more on, Flutie rushed for what should have been a 1st down, but was nailed by an Edmonton defender, knocking Flutie back at least 5 yards, and sending the ball sailing far back, high in the air, which would be scooped up by the diving Willie Pless who would return it for a Edmonton TD, tying the game.
After rushing for a 1st down in the 2nd half, Flutie was knocked out by Willie Pless, and Jeff Garcia would lead the Stamps to a 10 point lead. However down 3 in the 4th, Edmonton drove down to the Calgary 31 yard line, and kicked a 48 yard FG with 1 second remaining.
In overtime Calgary elected to go for it on 3rd and 7 on the 12, rather than go for a risky field goal at an awkward angle. After stopping the Stamps the Eskimos would run one play diving close to the out of bounds, but not out. The last seconds would tick off without another play for the Esks. Ending this one in an overtime tie.
