Kyna

Kyna stood in the hallway trembling. She could feel the energy radiating from the eggs. They were about to hatch. One by one the other candidates started to make their way onto the sands. Kyna entered in turn, Adlai, her blue firelizard, guiding her faltering steps with helpful chirps. She'd had to leave her staff behind, so she was relying totally on the little, blue flitter for directions. She took a deep breath, stopped shaking and stode forward to the sands.

Baeris leaned closer and said quietly, "The sands are quite hot, so if you need anyone to help you, just call out. It’s perfectly all right."

Kyna nearly jumped out of her skin. She hadn't heard the Weyrwoman approach. Kyna muttered something to the effect of "I'll be okay." and stepped onto the sands.

She jumped slighty as her foot touched the hot sand. It felt as if she had stepped on the fire pit. She kept going forward until Adlai told her to stop. Adlai sent her thoughts telling her he was the only firelizard still on the sands. All the others were out of the way. Should he leave?

"No!" Kyna commanded softly. She felt stupid enough stumbling around. If he left she would never find an egg. A voice came from somewhere in front of her. "Doom-doo-ah-nath?!" Majora pronounced. A dragon warbled loudly in agreement. "Dhumduanath! He’s mine!"

It's begun. Kyna thought to herself.

Kyna heard the sounds of the crowd, the other candidates and the new dragonlings, but she was waiting for another sound. The sound of a dragon calling her name. She heard Adlai chirp at someone. "Who...?"

"It's Alsaida." The girl answered.

Kyna nodded. The girl was another candidate who Kyna had met earlier. Suddenly she heard something. It sounded like .....something...it needed......help. It was so faint. She could barely hear it.

"Please," Alsaida pleaded, "could you have them quiet down?"

She must hear it as well Kyna thought and then echoed her companion. "Please? It’s ... something we can hear..."

The entire sands hushed, but it wasn't quiet enough. The voice was still faint. Then Adlai started cheeping. Kyna went where he told her too. She felt Alsaida moving beside her. When they were near the voice, Alsaida helped Kyna kneel. The voice was most definately coming from near-by. She reached out her hand to feel what.... A tiny shock struck her as she realized what it was.

An egg! She realized. There's a dragonet stuck inside this egg! Without stopping to think Kyna balled her hand into a fist and smashed the egg to bits. The voice came to Kyna again, this time stronger. I am here... I am sorry, that you had to help me, but I will see for you! Can you see now?

Kyna's mouth dropped open as she heard the voice. She rocked back on her heels and stared straight out in front of her. For the first time in ten turns Kyna could see. She saw the other hatchlings, the other candidates, the sands, the stands, the dragons, the sky....a swirling maw of colour. "I...you see for me."

She heard the dragonet laugh inside her mind. I'm Kovith. Let's go get something to eat!

Kyna leaned over and helped Kovith to stand. As she helped the small blue dragon to meat, Kyna smiled. She walked all the way out off the sands and into the area where the other hatchlings were being fed without tripping. Not an amazing thing really, since she made it all the way here without tripping. The difference this time being that Adlai had run off to meet the other firelizards before she left the sands.

Kyna snorted and rolled over. "Go way." She mummbled to whatever had woken her. She shoved her head under her pillow and hoped whoever it was took the hint.

Adlai, firmly believing it was breakfast, continued chirping and pulling at Kyna's long, blond hair. Seeing his owner still asleep, he flew at Kovith hoping the dragon would get her up.

The dragon rose from it's bed and bespoke his friend, but not in the normal way. Instead of talking, he sent her picures. Pictures of sunrises, people waking up, the weyr coming to life, him eating Adlai if the little twerp didn't shut up.

Kyna laughed and rose. She grabbed Adlai out of the air and pet him to quiet him. "I get the picture Kovith. Time to get up."

No. Actually it's past time to get up. The tiny blue shook himself and began to groom himself.

The tiny dragon looked to be a hatchling, but was, in reality, full grown. It had been 3 turns since Kyna impressed him and he hadn't grown much since then. He was 6 feet long, at most and stood only 4 and a half feet high. Kyna could ride him, but only for short periods of time. She didn't mind his small size though, he fit into most rooms in the weyr and went with her everywhere. He was the only dragon that ever fit inside the dining hall.

Kyna yawned at let her two friends lead her to food.

Adlai quickly disappeared to join the rest of the firelizards being fed outside. Kovith walked in and went to his normal spot in the cornor, right beside Kyna's table. She sat down, yawned again and waited for food. Kovith looked around. We're not as late as Adlai insisted. He told her and sent her pictures of the crowded room, the kitchens and he strengthened a few pictures Adlai was sending. Kyna smiled. Got to give the little guy credit. He is offering to share with us.

"No offence Kovith, but raw meat isn't my idea of breakfast." Kovith lay his head in her lap and she began to rub it.

The dragon gave a low moan and turned his head to make it easier for her to reach. You're very good at this.... Suddenly he put his head up, and Kyna's mind filled with pictures of the Weyrwoman.

Kyna examined the older woman. She saw Magika's green dress, her long brown hair and brown eyes. She saw the little wrinkles around Magika's mouth that indicated a smile spent a lot of it's time there. As if to prove that fact, the Weyrwoman smiled at Kyna. "Good morning, Kyna. Kovith."

Kyna smiled as she watched, through Kovith's eyes, the Weyrwoman sit down next to her. "Fine Weyrwoman. It's nice to see you this morning...."
